Summer Thought Catalog

I haven't written very much this summer because there are fewer life events when I'm not in fast-paced quarter system school year mode. I did write about some cool things at my internship and about my tae kwon do test, but other than that, my summer has been composed of a lot of random little thoughts that don't make a cohesive post on their own; however, if I put them all together, then it's something, right? Here goes:

1. Adulthood is knowing what the appropriate behavior is and having the self control to make that choice rather than the easier or more fun alternative. This was my realization while slurping the last of a frappuccino out of the bottom of my cup through a straw dressed in my business casual and experiencing cognitive dissonance.

2. I started making a list of things I hate.

  • Commercials on the radio
  • Traffic lights turning green when no cars are there
  • When people use "that" instead of "who"
  • When people have strong opinions about things that don't affect them
  • When people force choices on other people
  • When people negatively judge others for legitimate, personal choices that differ from their own
That's just the beginning, but after thinking "I hate this!" so many times about the same thing, I just started making a list.

3. Drinking out of a ridiculous vessel, usually with a straw, makes me drink more water. (I recorded this on my list twice. It's pretty important. At least the ridiculous cup I got at the medieval faire is. It is purple and white stripes with a purple crazy straw and the cup itself has corkscrew ridges.)

4. I could eat Sichuan eggplant forever. But actually; I think this might be my favorite real food (as opposed to ice cream, my favorite junk food). Like, give me one thing to eat for the rest of my life, and I would probably choose this. It's so good. Next time you get Chinese food, check out the eggplant dishes, especially if you're someplace legit.

5. I wore a skirt or dress to work for all but six days of the last nine weeks. The trick is to always wear shorts underneath. Valuable things I learned while attending girls' school.

6. The "Circle of Trust" is  a funny and bit in the movie Meet the Parents, it's a pretty good description of how people relate to one another. There have been a few times this summer when I've realized that I'm in someone's Circle of Trust, and that's a pretty big deal. It is a moving epiphany and it means a lot to me that I can be the trustworthy one.

7.  I like hitting things. Some people relax by doing yoga; I relax by sweating in a smelly, yucky basement and hitting things. Feels good.

8. I decided not to do BEDA this month because I don't have much to say and I'm going to leave the country for two weeks without my computer or reliable internet access.

Today is awesome because I got a haircut that I like and that solves the style problems I've been dealing with for the last few weeks.

Some Observations from Behind the Wheel

I've done quite a bit of driving this summer, especially considering that I do zero driving for nine months out of the year, I have some observations I would like to share.

1. The moment people become drivers, they are instantly idiots obsessed with getting from point a to point b. I mean, there was this instance the other day when a vehicle was entirely blocking the left turn lane while the left turn arrow was green simply because the driver had to leave Starbucks at that exact moment but couldn't possibly turn left. I missed the arrow. It made me angry.

2. I hate intersections where the light will turn green but there are no cars there and I have to wait at my red light for a stupid amount of time that feels entirely unnecessary.

3. Radio stations play too many commercials. On my 15 minute drive to work, I could spend the entire drive listening to commercials waiting for some music to come on and it drives me nuts.

4. I externalize my anger while driving in a way completely different than my normal life. It's kind of the only time I actually swear, and it's probably because I am usually alone in the car.

Driving has confirmed that people are stupid. I know I'm not immune to driving stupidity, but I mostly notice the stupid stuff because it freaks me out in an "I'm gonna die!!!" kind of way. So I wanted to rant. This is my rant. Ok. Done.

Today is awesome because THE 12TH DOCTOR IS REVEALED!!!! Peter Capaldi, I look forward to seeing what you bring to the role.
